Cursive writing A to Z, the way Indian schools teach it
Cursive Writing A to Z is an Indian school handwriting system that teaches capital letters, small letters, and joining on four-line copy, for kids in UKG to Class 3.

Your child's school copy has four lines, not three. That one difference is why most cursive worksheets you find online do not help. American sheets put small letters on a three-line ruling, so the child writes a lovely small a in the wrong place and the class teacher marks it again. Everything on this site sits on the four-line ruling used in Indian school copies.
What four-line cursive actually means
Four lines make three spaces. Small letters like a, c, e and o live in the middle space, between line 2 and line 3. Tall letters like b, d, h, k, l and t start up at line 1. Letters with tails, g, j, p, q and y, drop below line 3 into line 4. Capitals run from line 1 down to line 3. Once a child can name the four lines, corrections stop being an argument.
The order to teach in
- Warm up the hand. One week of standing lines, sleeping lines, curves and loops on four-line copy. No letters yet.
- Capital letters A to Z. Bigger strokes and fewer tails, so the child gets confidence first. Two or three letters a week.
- Small letters a to z. Sort them by height while you teach: middle space letters, tall letters, then tail letters.
- Joining two letters. Start with easy pairs like an, in, on, un, then me and no. The exit hook of the first letter becomes the entry of the second.
- Words, then a sentence a day. Name, school name, then a short line from the school copy. Speed comes last.

What is in the books
Each book is a PDF made for A4 paper. Stroke arrows on the model letter, tracing rows, then blank four-line rows for independent writing. No cartoon clutter around the letter, because the child copies whatever is biggest on the page. Print at home, or take the file to a xerox shop and get a stapled book for about Rs 20 to Rs 30.

Questions parents ask
At what age should a child start cursive?
Most Indian schools introduce cursive in Class 1, once the child can form capitals and small letters in print without help. UKG is fine for tracing. If the pencil grip is still shaky, spend a few weeks on patterns and strokes before starting letters.
Is this four-line or three-line writing?
Four-line, the ruling used in Indian school copies. Line 1 is the top, line 2 and line 3 hold the body of small letters, and line 4 below takes the tails of g, j, p, q and y. Capitals run from line 1 to line 3.
Do you teach capital letters or small letters first?
Capitals first, because they use larger and simpler strokes and most of them do not need tails. Small letters come next, then joining. That is the order Indian schools follow and the order the books are numbered in.
Can I print the PDF at a xerox shop?
Yes. Pages are A4 with a plain margin, so a xerox shop can print and staple a full book for roughly Rs 20 to Rs 30. You can also print the same file again later for a younger child at home.
How long does A to Z take?
At ten minutes a day, many children finish the capitals in about three weeks and the small letters in another three. Joining takes longer because it depends on speed and grip. Children who take longer usually need shorter sessions, not extra pages.
Is there a free sample?
An eight page sampler of capitals A to H is planned and is not ready yet. Until it is, all 26 letter pages on this site are free to read, and they carry the same stroke instructions the books use.
