Letter U
How to write the letter U in cursive
Capital U runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small u stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where U and u sit on the four lines
- Capital U
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small u
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.
- Height group
- Middle, see the height groups explained.
Does your child's sun look like svn in the school notebook? Start with one small fix: keep the bottom of u rounded, not pointed.
Write capital U in 3 steps
Use four-line Indian ruling and guide your child through each movement.
- Begin with an upstroke to line 1.
- Curve down to line 3, round the bottom and rise back to line 1.
- Come down again and finish with a joining tail.
Both tall strokes should reach line 1. Watch that the second one does not stop short.
Write small u in 3 steps
- Begin at line 3 and rise to line 2.
- Come down to line 3, round the bottom and rise back to line 2.
- Come down again, then curve into a short joining tail.
Keep small u inside the middle space between lines 2 and 3.
Fix the curve before filling a page
If the bottom is pointed, u starts looking like v. Slow down just that curve instead of asking your child to repeat the whole letter twenty times.
Say this while the pencil moves: "Round bottom for u, pointed bottom for v."
Also check:
- Equal height: both legs of small u reach line 2.
- A clear join: try un, um and ur once the shape is steady.
- The letter in a word: write sun and check whether the u still looks rounded.

Questions parents ask about U
Should small u touch the top line?
No. Small u stays between lines 2 and 3. Capital U reaches line 1 and comes down to line 3.
My child's u looks like v. What should we practise?
Practise the rounded bottom slowly. Once that curve is clear, try sun again before moving on to more words.
Does the free pack include U?
No. It covers capitals A to H so you can try the four-line format. For capital U and small u, choose the A to Z pair.
How tall should capital U and small u be on four-line ruling?
Capital U fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small u fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
