How to write the letter W in cursive

Capital W runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small w stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where W and w sit on the four lines

Capital W
Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
Small w
Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.

Write capital W in three steps

Use four-line Indian ruling. Capital W looks like two V shapes joined.

  1. Start at line 1. Slant down to line 3, then up to line 1.
  2. Slant down to line 3 again, then back up to line 1. Keep all four slants evenly spaced.
  3. Finish with a small curve to the right.

Both bottom points should touch line 3. Watch the last slant: it needs as much room as the others.

Write small w in three steps

Small w follows the same pattern, but stays in the middle space between lines 2 and 3.

  1. Slant down from line 2 to line 3, then up to line 2.
  2. Repeat the movement to make the second point. Keep the four slants evenly spaced.
  3. Finish with a flat top stroke at line 2, ready to join the next letter.

When practising we or wa, check that the join leaves from the top of w, not from the base line.

The mistake to correct first

If your child writes only three slants, w can look like v. Before asking for another full row, count the four slants aloud together while writing one letter.

Then check:

Correct one thing at a time so your child knows what to change in the next attempt.

Water well. Check that every letter keeps its own height: the capital reaches line 1, the middle letters stay between lines 2 and 3, and only a tail goes down to line 4.

Questions parents ask about W

Should capital W and small w be the same height?

No. Capital W reaches from line 1 to line 3. Small w stays between lines 2 and 3.

Why does my child's w look cramped?

The last slant may be getting squeezed. Practise one w with four evenly spaced slants before moving on to a row.

How tall should capital W and small w be on four-line ruling?

Capital W fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small w fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
