How to write the letter V in cursive
Capital V runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small v stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where V and v sit on the four lines
- Capital V
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small v
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.

Write capital V in 3 steps
- Start at line 1 and slant down to line 3.
- Make a clear point on line 3, then slant back up to line 1.
- Finish with a small curve to the right.
Keep both slants the same length and angle. Capital V usually ends without a join, so the next letter starts on its own.
Write small v in 3 steps
- Start at line 2 and slant down to line 3.
- Make a pointed bottom, then slant back up to line 2.
- Finish with a short, flat top stroke to carry the join into the next letter.
Small v stays in the middle space between lines 2 and 3. Its point should touch line 3, not float above it.
The mistake to correct first
A rounded base turns v into u. Before asking your child to fill another row, write uv side by side.
Show the difference: u has a rounded bottom; v has a point. Then ask your child to copy the pair, keeping both letters on the same base line.
Check these three things:
- The point touches line 3.
- Both slants are even.
- Small v has a short, flat finishing stroke for the join.

Questions parents ask about V
Why does my child's v keep looking like u?
The pencil is rounding the bottom instead of making a point. Practise uv together so your child can compare the shapes before writing more.
Should capital V join to the next letter?
Capital V usually ends without a join. Finish its small right curve, then begin the next letter separately.

How tall should capital V and small v be on four-line ruling?
Capital V fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small v fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
