Letter A
How to write the letter A in cursive
Capital A runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small a stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where A and a sit on the four lines
- Capital A
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small a
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.
- Height group
- Middle, see the height groups explained.
Write capital A in 3 steps
- Start at line 1 and slide down to line 3 in one slanted stroke.
- Lift the pencil, return to the top and make the second slant down to line 3. The two slants meet in a point at line 1.
- Add the crossbar between lines 2 and 3, a little above the middle, not close to the base.
Capital A stays between lines 1 and 3. Nothing drops into line 4. Keep the two slants close together: a capital A that is wider than it is tall is the first thing a teacher circles.
Write small a in 3 steps
- Keep the letter between lines 2 and 3. Start on the right side of the belly and move anticlockwise.
- Close the belly fully against the straight back on the right.
- Finish with a small exit hook pointing towards the next letter.
Small a is a middle letter. It fills the gold pair only, so it ends up about half the height of capital A, and it has no tail below line 3.
The mistake to correct first
If your child draws a circle and then adds a separate stick, small a can look like print. Practise the belly-first movement so the pencil reaches the back, ready for the exit hook.
Check these before asking for another row:
- Open belly: close it against the back so a does not read as u.
- Capital A too wide: the two slants should meet in a point and stay close, not sprawl across the line.
- Low crossbar: move the capital A crossbar up towards the middle.
- Wrong height: keep small a between lines 2 and 3, and capital A between lines 1 and 3.

Questions parents ask about A
Does the free pack include small a?
No. The free starter pack covers capitals A to H, so it has a full sheet for capital A. For capital and small letters from A to Z, choose the pair at Rs 149.
Should small a touch line 1?
No. Small a sits between lines 2 and 3. Only capital A reaches line 1. If the two come out the same height, that is the first thing to correct.
What should I correct if a looks like u?
Check the belly first. It needs to close fully against the straight back. Work on that before asking your child to write faster or fill another row.
Can I download the free pack directly?
Fill in the form on this page or on the free pack page. The 11 page pack is emailed in about a minute. There is no direct download link.
How tall should capital A and small a be on four-line ruling?
Capital A fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small a fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
