How to write the letter Z in cursive
Capital Z runs from line 1 to line 3, with a loop above line 4. Small z stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where Z and z sit on the four lines
- Capital Z
- Line 1 down to line 3, then a loop below line 3.
- Small z
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.
- Height group
- Middle, see the height groups explained.
Does your child write a print z in cursive homework? The missing part is the lower loop. On four-line Indian copy, both capital Z and small z dip below line 3.
Write capital Z in 3 steps
- Start near line 1 and move across to the right.
- Slant back down to line 3.
- Loop below line 3, staying above line 4, then bring the stroke up ready to join.
Write small z in 3 steps
- Make a short, flat top near line 2, inside the middle space.
- Slant back down to line 3.
- Make a small loop below line 3, staying above line 4, then bring the stroke up for the next letter.
The mistake to correct first
If your child copies a print z, the bottom loop is often missing. In this cursive form, that loop helps the letter lead into the next one.
Point to the loop in the model before asking for another attempt. Correct that one part first, rather than filling a whole row with the same mistake.
What to watch on four-line notebook
- Keep the top flat. A curved top can make small z look like s.
- Allow the lower loop. Both forms dip below line 3. Unlike print z, they do not sit entirely above the base line.
- Keep the loop within the ruling. It belongs between lines 3 and 4.
- Finish with words. Teach z last in the alphabet sequence, then try zoo and zebra that day.

Should cursive z go below the base line?
Yes. In the forms taught here, both capital Z and small z have a loop below line 3. Keep it above line 4.
Why does my child's small z look like s?
Check the top stroke first. Keep it short and flat before the slant down to line 3.

How tall should capital Z and small z be on four-line ruling?
Capital Z fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3, then finishes with a loop above line 4. Small z fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
