How to write the letter G in cursive

Capital G runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small g sits between lines 2 and 3, with its tail in line 4. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where G and g sit on the four lines

Capital G: Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
Small g: Tail. Body between lines 2 and 3, tail down into line 4.

Write capital G in 3 steps

Start like capital C. Begin just below line 1 and curve round down to line 3.
Turn the stroke inwards. Keep the large curve open on the right.
Finish with a short bar pointing right. It sits at about line 2, the middle of the letter. Keep it short so the open curve is still clear.

Capital G fills the two spaces from line 1 to line 3. It does not drop into line 4.

Write small g in 3 steps

Make the belly. Start exactly like small a, with a round belly between lines 2 and 3.
Add the straight back. Bring the stroke down the right side of the belly.
Loop the tail left. Continue down to line 4, swing left and bring the stroke back up to line 3.

Small g is a tail letter. Only the tail enters the bottom space and it has to reach line 4. The belly stays between lines 2 and 3.

The mistake to correct first

If g and q are getting swapped in homework, say "g goes left, q goes right" while your child writes. Check the tail direction before correcting the belly.

Watch for these too:

The tail stops short. A tail that ends halfway between lines 3 and 4 makes g look like a squashed a. It should touch line 4.
The belly drops below line 3. Keep it in the middle space; only the tail goes down to line 4.
Capital G looks like C. Check that your child has added the inward turn and the short bar at the middle.
The bar is at the wrong height. Too high and G reads as a 6, too low and it reads as C with a foot.

Questions parents ask about G

Does the free pack include small g?

How is small g different from small a?

They begin with the same belly and back. For g, the back continues down to line 4 and forms a left-looping tail. For a, the back stops at line 3.

Should the whole letter reach line 4?

No. For small g, only the tail reaches line 4. Keep the belly between lines 2 and 3, the same height as small a.
