Letter Y
How to write the letter Y in cursive
Capital Y runs from line 1 to line 3, with a loop above line 4. Small y sits between lines 2 and 3, with its tail in line 4. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where Y and y sit on the four lines
- Capital Y
- Line 1 down to line 3, then a loop below line 3.
- Small y
- Tail. Body between lines 2 and 3, tail down into line 4.

Does your child's small y look like a u with a comma underneath? Start with the tail. Keep the body in the middle space and take the tail down into line 4 before looping it back up.

Write capital Y in three steps
Use four-line Indian ruling, like your child's school notebook.
- Start with an upstroke to line 1, then come down to line 3.
- Make a second stroke from line 1 to meet the first.
- Carry it down into a loop above line 4.
Write small y in three steps
- Make a small u shape in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3.
- Continue the final downstroke below line 3 into line 4.
- Loop the tail to the left, then bring it back up to join the next letter.
What to check in the school notebook
- A rounded body: Small y starts like small u. If the base of u is pointed, practise rounding it before adding the tail.
- A left-looping tail: The tail loops to the left, the same way as g.
- The right height: The body stays between lines 2 and 3. Only the tail enters line 4.
The mistake to correct first
Correct a tail that stops on line 3. It leaves small y looking like u followed by a comma.
Ask your child to finish the u shape, take the tail down into line 4 and bring the loop back up. Check that movement before asking for another row.

Questions parents ask about Y
Should the whole small y go below line 3?
No. Keep the u-shaped body in the middle space. Only the tail goes below line 3 into line 4.
Which way should the tail loop?
To the left, like the tail of small g. Bring it back up so it is ready to join.
Is Y included in the free pack?
No. The free 11 page starter pack covers capitals A to H. It lets you try the four-line practice format before choosing the A to Z pair.
How do I receive the worksheets?
For the free pack, fill in the email form. It arrives in about a minute. For the paid pair, order at /order/ and pay on PayU. The files are emailed as soon as your payment goes through.
How tall should capital Y and small y be on four-line ruling?
Capital Y fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3, then finishes with a loop above line 4. Small y keeps its body in the middle space between lines 2 and 3, and only the tail goes down into line 4. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
