How to write the letter N in cursive
Capital N runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small n stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where N and n sit on the four lines
- Capital N
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small n
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.
- Height group
- Middle, see the height groups explained.
Does your child's small n look like a v with an extra leg? Start with one slow, round hump on four-line notebook. Get that shape clear before asking for another full row.
Write N and n in 3 steps
Use four-line Indian ruling, counting from line 1 at the top to line 4 at the bottom.
- Start with capital N. Make an up stroke to line 1, come down to line 3, then arch up and over into the second down stroke. Both legs should land on line 3.
- Keep small n in the middle space. Make an up stroke towards line 2, curve over into one round hump, then come down to sit on line 3. Finish with a small exit hook.
- Try a short join. Use that exit hook to practise an, in, on and un. Keep the n the same size in each join.
The mistake to correct first
If the hump is pointed, n can look like a v with an extra leg. Ask your child to slow down at the top and turn the pencil through a curve, not a sharp corner.
Check these before adding more practice:
- Round top: small n has one rounded hump.
- Even legs: both legs reach line 3 without crowding together or spreading too far apart.
- Middle-space height: small n stays between lines 2 and 3.
- Clear exit: the finishing hook leads into the next letter.
Practise this hump before moving to m and h. Both use the same rounded movement.

Questions parents ask about N
Should I make my child fill a whole page of n?
Not while the hump is still pointed. Practise the curve slowly, then try a short row. Check the shape before asking for more.
Why practise n before m and h?
The rounded hump in n is also used in m and h. Getting it right first gives your child a familiar movement to use in those letters.

How tall should capital N and small n be on four-line ruling?
Capital N fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small n fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
