How to write the letter C in cursive
Capital C runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small c stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where C and c sit on the four lines
- Capital C
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small c
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.

Write capital C in 3 steps
- Start just below line 1. Curve up and to the left.
- Sweep round and down to line 3, keeping the curve rounded.
- Finish with a small tail turning right. Leave the opening on the right clear.
Write small c in 3 steps
- Start near line 2, inside the middle space.
- Curve left and round down to line 3.
- Turn the tail right, keeping a gap between the two ends.
Small c stays between lines 2 and 3, even when it follows a tall letter.
The mistake to correct first
Closing the curve turns c into o. Before your child writes the next letter, ask: "Can you see the gap on the right?"
Then check these two things:
- A flat curve: Keep it rounded. A flattened c can start to look like an e.
- A tail pointing the wrong way: Finish towards the right so c can join into a, e and o.
Correct one thing at a time rather than asking your child to rub out the whole row.

Questions parents ask about C
Should capital C and small c be the same height?
No. Capital C reaches up towards line 1 and down to line 3. Small c stays in the middle space between lines 2 and 3.
My child keeps writing o instead of c. What should I say?
Try: "Stop before the ends touch." Ask your child to check the right-hand gap after each c before continuing.

How tall should capital C and small c be on four-line ruling?
Capital C fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small c fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
