Cursive Writing A to Z

Letter X

How to write the letter X in cursive

Capital X runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small x stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where X and x sit on the four lines

Capital X
Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
Small x
Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.
Height group
Middle, see the height groups explained.

Does your child's x look more like a y in the school notebook? Check where the strokes cross. A clear pencil lift and a cross at the middle help both capital X and small x look neat.

Write X and x in 3 steps

Use four-line Indian ruling. Count the lines from top to bottom.

  1. Make the first stroke. For capital X, slant from the top left on line 1 down to the bottom right on line 3. For small x, make the same stroke from line 2 to line 3.
  2. Lift and cross. Lift the pencil. Start at the top right of the letter's space and slant down to the bottom left.
  3. Check the middle. The two strokes should meet halfway through the letter's height, with all four arms looking even.

The mistake to correct first

If the strokes cross too close to the top or bottom, x can start looking like y or k when your child writes quickly.

Before the next attempt, ask: "Where will the two strokes meet?" Let your child point to the middle, then write.

Keep capital X between lines 1 and 3. Keep small x inside the middle space, between lines 2 and 3.

Practise with the rest of A to Z

X appears less often in school words. Revise it with nearby letters rather than spending a full week on it.

Questions parents ask about X

Should my child lift the pencil for x?

Yes. For the X and x shown here, lift after the first stroke, then make the crossing stroke.

Does the free pack include X?

No. The free 11 page starter pack covers capitals A to H. Submit the email form to receive it in about a minute and try the four-line practice format.

Which book has both capital X and small x?

Choose the A to Z pair for Rs 149. It includes both capital and small letters.

How tall should capital X and small x be on four-line ruling?

Capital X fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small x fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
