How to write the letter O in cursive
Capital O runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small o stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where O and o sit on the four lines
- Capital O
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small o
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.
- Height group
- Middle, see the height groups explained.
Does your child write a neat o on its own, but struggle to join it in homework? Check where the stroke ends. Cursive o closes at the top and leaves from the top, not the bottom.
One round shape, two sizes
On four-line Indian copy, capital O reaches from just below line 1 down to line 3. Small o stays between lines 2 and 3.
Both move anticlockwise. Help your child get the direction right before asking for a full row in the school notebook.
Write capital O in 3 steps
- Start just below line 1. Curve left to begin the round shape.
- Go anticlockwise. Continue down to line 3, then curve up the right side.
- Close at the top. Finish with a small curl pointing right.
Write small o in 3 steps
- Start near line 2. Curve left, then down towards line 3.
- Come round and up. Keep the shape round and close it at the top.
- Add a tiny top loop. Let the exit stroke point right, ready to join the next letter.
The mistake to correct first
Going clockwise. Ask your child to start at the top and curve left first. Small o follows the same anticlockwise direction as a, c, d, g and q.
Then check these three things:
- Close the shape. A gap can make o look unfinished or like another letter.
- Keep the exit at the top. In joins such as on and oa, do not take the joining stroke from line 3.
- Keep it round. A stretched or heavily tilted o can make the word harder to read.

Questions parents ask about O
Should capital O and small o be the same height?
No. Capital O reaches from just below line 1 to line 3. Small o fits in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3.
Why does my child's o look wrong when joined?
Check the exit stroke first. It should leave from the top. A joining stroke pulled from the bottom changes the shape of the join.

How tall should capital O and small o be on four-line ruling?
Capital O fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small o fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
