How to write the letter S in cursive

Capital S runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small s stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where S and s sit on the four lines

Capital S: Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
Small s: Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.

Write capital S in 3 steps

Start at the top. Begin just below line 1 and curve up and over to the left.
Bend down. Come down through line 2 in an S bend, so the letter changes direction in the middle.
Finish at the base. Swing round to line 3 and finish with a small curl. The lower curve is a little bigger than the upper one.

Capital S fills the two spaces from line 1 to line 3. Nothing drops into line 4.

Write small s in 3 steps

Start between the lines. Begin at line 3 and rise to line 2 in a slanted stroke.
Curve the top. Turn back on itself at line 2, so the top is round and not flat.
Bring the bend down. Come down to line 3 and close into a small point that carries the join into the next letter.

Small s is a middle letter. It stays between lines 2 and 3, about half the height of capital S, and never rises above line 2.

The mistake to correct first

If your child writes s as a mirror image, opening the wrong way, pause the row. More copies of the same mistake will not help.

Let your child trace over a correctly formed model with their own pencil twice. Then ask them to write one s alone and compare the direction.

What to check before the next row

Keep the top curved. A flat top makes s look like the number 5.
Upper curve smaller than lower. On capital S the top curve is slightly smaller than the bottom one. Two equal curves make it top heavy.
Watch the bottom. It closes into a small point that carries the join into the next letter.
Keep small s in its space. It stays between line 2 and line 3, never above line 2.

School sun. Check that every letter keeps its own height: the capital reaches line 1, the middle letters stay between lines 2 and 3, and only a tail goes down to line 4.

Questions parents ask about S

Why does my child's s look like 5?

Check the top first. It should curve back on itself, not form a flat top or a corner. Correct that curve before asking for another row.

Should small s touch line 1?

No. Small s stays in the middle space between line 2 and line 3. Capital S starts just below line 1 and comes down to line 3.
