How to write the letter J in cursive
Capital J runs from line 1 to line 3, with a loop above line 4. Small j sits between lines 2 and 3, with its tail in line 4. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where J and j sit on the four lines
- Capital J
- Line 1 down to line 3, then a loop below line 3.
- Small j
- Tail. Body between lines 2 and 3, tail down into line 4.

Write capital J in 3 steps
Use four-line Indian ruling so your child can see where the letter starts and where the loop stops.
- Start with a loop just under line 1.
- Bring the stroke down past line 3.
- Curl to the left into a bottom loop, keeping it above line 4.
Write small j in 3 steps
- Make a short upstroke to line 2.
- Come down through line 3, then curl left into a loop above line 4.
- Add a dot above line 2, at the same height as the dot on small i.
The mistake to correct first
Check that the bottom loop turns left, not right. A right-turning loop can push the tail into the next letter and make the word look crowded.
Before asking your child to fill another row, check one J and one j:
- Both letters drop below line 3.
- Both bottom loops stay above line 4.
- Small j has its dot above line 2.
Revise small j alongside small i. The matching dot height gives your child one less thing to remember.

Should J go below the writing line?
Yes. In this form, both capital J and small j go below line 3. Keep the bottom loop above line 4.
Where should the dot on small j sit?
Above line 2, at the same height as the dot on small i.

Capital J fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3, then finishes with a loop above line 4. Small j keeps its body in the middle space between lines 2 and 3, and only the tail goes down into line 4. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
