How to write the letter K in cursive
Capital K runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small k starts at line 1 and comes down to line 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where K and k sit on the four lines
- Capital K
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small k
- Tall. Line 1 down to line 3, with the body between lines 2 and 3.
- Height group
- Tall, see the height groups explained.
Does your child's small k look like h in the school notebook? Focus on the middle: k needs a small loop and a kicking leg, not an arch.
Write capital K in 3 steps
Use four-line Indian ruling. Capital K reaches from line 1 to line 3.
- Draw the tall down stroke from line 1 to line 3.
- Bring a slanted arm in from the top right to meet the stem at the middle.
- Change direction at that meeting point. Kick the leg out to the right, ending on line 3.
The arm and leg meet at the stem. They should not run across it as one straight diagonal.
Write small k in 3 steps
Small k is tall too. Its stem reaches line 1, just like small h.
- Draw the stem from line 1 down to line 3.
- Make a small loop at middle height, meeting the stem.
- Kick the leg out to the right and let it land on line 3.
Ask your child to check: "Have I made a loop and a kick, or an h arch?"
The mistake to correct first
If the arm and leg look like one straight slash across the stem, correct that before asking for another full row.
Show where the arm meets the stem, then where the leg changes direction. Let your child try one K beside yours.
Check these points in the school notebook:
- The arm meets the stem at the middle, not at the top.
- The stem and kicking leg both end on line 3, at different points.
- Small k has a loop and a kick. Small h has an arch.

Questions parents ask about K
Should small k stay between the middle lines?
No. Small k has a tall stem from line 1 to line 3. Keep its small loop at middle height.
Why does my child's k look like h?
Usually, the middle shape has become an arch. Practise the small loop and separate kicking leg before trying a full row.

How tall should capital K and small k be on four-line ruling?
Capital K fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small k is a tall letter, so its stem also starts at line 1, but the body stays in the middle space between lines 2 and 3. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
