How to write the letter B in cursive

Capital B runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small b starts at line 1 and comes down to line 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where B and b sit on the four lines

Capital B: Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
Small b: Tall. Line 1 down to line 3, with the body between lines 2 and 3.

Write capital B in 3 steps

Stem first. Start on line 1 and draw a straight stroke down to line 3.
Make the top bowl. Without lifting the pencil, retrace a little way up. Swing out for the small top bowl, then pinch in at the middle, around line 2.
Make the bottom bowl. Loop out for a larger bottom bowl and bring it back to the stem at line 3.

Capital B fills the two spaces from line 1 to line 3 and usually ends without a join. Let the next letter start fresh.

Write small b in 3 steps

Draw the tall stem. Start on line 1 and move down to line 3. This is what makes b a tall letter.
Retrace upwards. Keep the pencil on the page and go back up the stem to line 2.
Form the bowl. Curve out between lines 2 and 3, then close the bowl back on the stem.

The stem is tall and reaches line 1. The bowl stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, and touches the stem. Nothing goes into line 4.

The mistake to correct first

If your child draws a circle and adds a line beside it, they are copying a print-style b. In cursive, the stem comes first and the bowl grows out of the retrace in one movement.

Try saying: "Down, back up, then round." Check that movement before asking for another row in the school notebook.

What to check before the next row

Capital B: the bottom bowl should be bigger than the top one. Equal bowls can make it look like an 8.
Small b stem: it has to reach line 1. A stem that stops at line 2 turns b into a small o with a tick.
Small b bowl: keep it between lines 2 and 3, not as tall as the stem, and closed against the stem rather than floating beside it.
Pencil movement: form small b without lifting between the stem and bowl.

Blue ball. Check that every letter keeps its own height: the capital reaches line 1, the middle letters stay between lines 2 and 3, and only a tail goes down to line 4.

Why does my child's capital B look like an 8?

Check the straight stem and the bowl sizes. Keep the top bowl smaller and the bottom bowl larger, and make sure both bowls come back to the stem.

Should the bowl of small b reach line 1?

No. Only the tall stem reaches line 1. The bowl sits between lines 2 and 3, the same height as small a or small o.
