How to write the letter E in cursive
Capital E runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small e stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where E and e sit on the four lines
- Capital E
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small e

Help E and e sit neatly on the lines
Capital E needs two clear curves, with the lower one bigger than the upper one. Small e needs an open loop in the middle space.
If either shape looks crowded in homework, practise the movement before asking your child to fill a whole row.
Write capital E in 3 steps
- Start below line 1. Curve back to the left.
- Make the smaller top loop. Leave room below it for the larger curve.
- Make the larger bottom loop. Finish on line 3.
Check the balance: the lower half should be bigger than the upper half.
Write small e in 3 steps
- Start at line 3. Slant upward into the middle space.
- Loop back on itself. Keep a little space inside the loop.
- Round down to line 3. Finish with a joining tail for the next letter.
Keep small e between lines 2 and 3. It does not reach up to line 1.
The mistake to correct first
Do not start small e at the top like print e. A print-style bar can interrupt the cursive movement. Cursive e begins at the bottom with an upward slant that flows into the loop.
Also watch for:
- A pinched small e. Slow down so the loop stays open instead of filling in.
- Equal-sized curves in capital E. Make the lower curve larger.
- A missing joining tail. Let small e finish with a tail ready for the next letter.
Small e appears often in English words, so this is worth practising before moving on to a long row.

Questions parents ask about E
Why does my child's small e look like a dot?
The loop may be closing up. Ask your child to write slowly enough to leave a visible opening inside it.
Should small e start with a horizontal bar?
No. That is the print-style start. Begin at line 3 with an upward slant, then flow into the loop.

How tall should capital E and small e be on four-line ruling?
Capital E fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small e fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
