Cursive Writing A to Z

Letter F

How to write capital F and small f in cursive

Capital F runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small f runs from line 1 down to line 4, through both spaces. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where F and f sit on the four lines

Capital F
Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
Small f
Tall and tail. Line 1 down to line 4, through all three spaces.
Height group
Tall and tail, see the height groups explained.

Does your child's small f look like a tall t in the school notebook? Check the lower loop first. It needs to reach line 4, not stop at line 3.

Show F one stroke at a time

Use four-line Indian ruling, with line 1 at the top and line 4 at the bottom. Show one letter slowly, then let your child try beside it.

Capital F in 3 steps

  1. Start near line 1 with a curve over to the left.
  2. Bring the stroke down to line 3 and finish with a small tail to the right.
  3. Add the crossbar at middle height.

Small f in 3 steps

  1. Loop up to line 1.
  2. Come down through line 3 and make the lower loop into line 4.
  3. Bring the stroke back up, keeping the crossbar at line 2 height.

The mistake to correct first

The lower loop stops at line 3. This makes small f look like a tall t and leaves the joining stroke unfinished.

Point to line 4 before the next attempt. Ask your child to take the lower loop down to that line.

Questions parents ask about F

Does the free pack include small f?

No. The free 11 page starter pack covers capitals A to H, including capital F. Submit the email form and it arrives in about a minute.

Should my child keep repeating small f if the loops are uneven?

Go back to simpler loop practice first. Once those loops are steady, return to small f and check the upper and lower loops separately.

How tall should capital F and small f be on four-line ruling?

Capital F fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small f uses all four lines: the stem starts at line 1, the body sits between lines 2 and 3, and the loop drops to line 4. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
