"They know the letters. Why is the copy still untidy?"

Recognising a letter and placing it correctly are two different jobs.

Your child may know that B and b are the same letter. But when the pencil touches the copy, there are more decisions to make.

Where does the stroke start? How high should it go? Which line should the letter sit on? Does anything go below that line?

When those decisions are unclear, you see the same patterns across the page:

• Small a, r and s grow as tall as capitals.
• Tall letters such as b and l stay too short.
• The body of g is too large, leaving little room for its tail.
• Letters float above the writing line.
• The first pair looks careful, but the last row changes size.

"Write neatly" asks your child to fix all of this at once.

A more useful instruction is smaller: "Keep this small a between these two lines."

This book gives you a printed example to point to while you say it.

What happens at the study table

It is after school. The tiffin box is still waiting to be washed. There is other homework to finish.

You open the four-line notebook and write a sample pair. Your child copies it once, then asks you to show it again.

Soon you are writing the models, correcting the height and deciding how much more practice is enough.

Every letter has its own sheet. The 26 capitals come first, then the 26 small letters, with a how-to-use page at the start and a certificate at the end. On each sheet the other form of the letter sits faintly beside the model, so your child sees the height difference before writing: capital A reaches line 1, small a stops at line 2.

Each letter sheet runs the same steps:

There is no need to finish a sheet in one sitting. The space is there for practice, not as a daily target.

Why keep capitals and small letters together?

If your child writes small a as tall as capital A, practising capitals alone does not address that comparison.

With both alphabets in one book, you can print the A sheet and the a sheet and lay them side by side. Each sheet also shows the other form faintly beside its model. Point to both and ask:

"Which one uses the top space? Which one stays in the middle?"

The same question works differently for B and b, because small b is a tall letter.

That is the useful part. Your child is not learning that every small letter must be short. They are learning that small letters have different height groups.

Show your child where each letter sits

Count the four lines from the top: line 1, line 2, line 3, line 4.

Line 3 is the line on which the main body of the letter sits. The space between lines 2 and 3 is the middle space.

Most tall letters reach line 1. Small t stops a little short. Small f is the exception: it uses all four lines.

Capitals generally occupy the space from line 1 to line 3. Follow the model for loops, especially in capital J and Z.

You do not need to ask your child to memorise the whole table today.

Before one attempt, ask just this: "Middle space, tall, or tail?"

Then check whether the written letter matches the answer.

Ten minutes a day, without finishing a page a day

A week of practice does not have to mean racing from A to Z.

Use ten minutes as a short routine, not a promise that every child will master a letter in that time. If your child is tired or frustrated, stop earlier.

Here is one way to use the book during a school week.

Monday: See the difference

Choose a pair such as Aa.

Spend two minutes looking at where each letter starts and sits. Trace a few pairs for three minutes. Copy a few for three minutes. Use the last two minutes to find one pair where the height is clear.

Ask your child to point out what they did correctly.

Tuesday: Repeat before adding more

Return to Aa.

Look at yesterday's clearest attempt. Trace if needed, then copy again. Keep the instruction the same: capital uses the upper space; small a stays in the middle.

You are making the task familiar, not testing how quickly your child can fill a row.

Wednesday: Compare with a tall small letter

Move to Bb if your child is ready.

Now small b rises above the middle space. Compare it with small a from the earlier page.

This is a good moment to explain that "small letter" does not always mean "short letter".

Thursday: Bring in the school notebook

Look for A, a, B or b in recent homework.

Choose one letter whose height needs attention. Return to its practice page and work on that point only.

There is no need to rewrite the whole homework page.

Friday: Look back, then decide

Repeat whichever pair still needs support.

Compare the new attempt with Monday's work. Are the letters sitting on line 3 more consistently? Is small a staying in the middle space more often?

If not, keep the same pair for another session. The book can be used at your child's pace.

Where this book fits in learning cursive

The pair book focuses on capital and small letter forms. Once those are steadier, your child can move towards simple joins.

1. Start with capitals. Use the larger letter forms to practise strokes and pencil control. Work on a few letters at a time rather than asking for all 26 in one sitting.
2. Add small letters and compare. Use the paired pages to compare Aa, Bb and the other forms. Ask whether each small letter belongs in the middle space, rises tall, or has a tail. Check one feature before asking for more writing.
3. Move to simple joins when ready. Once individual forms are steady, begin combinations such as an, in and on in the school notebook. Follow the school's model, and do not force every capital to connect to the next letter.

If school has already introduced both alphabets, you do not need to restart the whole sequence. Use the pair book to revisit the letters causing difficulty in homework.
