Letter M
How to write the letter M in cursive
Capital M runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small m stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Free starter pack, capitals A to H
The free 11 page pack does not include M. It covers capitals A to H, so you can see the four-line format before choosing the A to Z book.
Where M and m sit on the four lines
- Capital M
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small m
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.
- Height group
- Middle, see the height groups explained.
Does your child's small m look like n, or keep growing an extra hump? Start with one clear check on four-line notebook: small m has two humps and three legs touching line 3.
Write M and m in three steps
- Start with capital M. Make an upward stroke to line 1, then two rounded humps that both come down to line 3.
- Keep small m in the middle space. Write two humps of the same width between lines 2 and 3. Small m never rises above line 2.
- Check after writing. Ask your child to count the legs aloud: m has three legs on line 3; n has two.
What to watch in the school notebook
- Uneven gaps: Give both humps the same width. Uneven spacing can make the whole word look shaky.
- Pointed tops: Keep the tops rounded so m does not look like a run of v shapes.
- An extra hump: This often appears when a child rushes through a word such as "mother". Check the finished letter before trying again.
Count the legs after writing, not while the pencil is moving. Correct one thing at a time.

Questions parents ask about M
Should small m touch line 1?
No. Small m stays between lines 2 and 3. Capital M reaches line 1.
What if my child keeps writing n instead?
Look at the finished letter together. Small m needs two humps and three legs; n has two legs.
Can I download the free pack without giving an email?
No. Submit the form on the free pack page and the pack will be emailed to you.
How tall should capital M and small m be on four-line ruling?
Capital M fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small m fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
