Your child may know the alphabet and still need help writing it

Recognising a letter and placing it correctly on four-line notebook are different tasks.

Open the relevant letter page. Look at the model together. Choose just one thing to watch, such as the starting point or height. Let your child make a few attempts before discussing what to change.

How a week of ten minutes can look

You do not need to teach all of cursive in seven days. Use the week to work on a small group of letters and notice what still needs attention.

1. Warm up for two minutes. Make a few loops, curves and slants on a four-line row. Keep the hand relaxed.
2. Practise one letter for four minutes. Look at the model together. Notice the starting point and height, then copy it slowly. Choose one correction rather than correcting everything.
3. Revise for four minutes, then stop. Revisit a familiar letter and compare the attempts. If the school has introduced joining, practise a familiar two-letter join in the school notebook. Do less on a heavy homework day.

1. MonMonday: Choose the letter

   Read the teacher's remark and pick one letter. Look at the capital on the four lines together, then trace it.

2. TueTuesday: The capital again

   Your child shows where the pencil starts, then copies the capital a few times from line 1 down to line 3.

3. WedWednesday: Its small letter

   Move to the small letter, say a after A, and keep it between line 2 and line 3.

4. ThuThursday: Check height

   Write a short row of small letters and see whether they stay in the band or grow as tall as capitals.

5. FriFriday: Without the model

   Look at the book, close it, write the pair in the school notebook, then open the book and compare.

6. SatSaturday: The difficult one

   Go back to whichever letter still makes your child stop and think, not the one that is already easy.

7. SunSunday: Look back, or rest

   Put Monday's page next to Saturday's and point at one thing that improved. Skip it on a full day.

Ten minutes is a practical routine, not a promise of perfect handwriting in a week. Follow your child’s comfort and the school’s pace.

Before you ask for another row, check this

A full row can repeat the same mistake. A quick check can make the next few attempts more useful.

• Is the letter sitting in the correct space on the four lines?
• Is its height close to the model?
• Do the tails of g, j, p, q and y reach the bottom line?
• Are small letters staying small?
• When practising words in the school notebook, is there a clear gap between words?

Take "m" as an example. Instead of saying "this is untidy", look at whether its humps are a similar height and whether the letter sits correctly on the line.

That gives your child a specific job for the next attempt.

Follow the teacher’s letter forms where they differ. The aim is to support school practice, not give your child two competing sets of instructions.
