Letter D
How to write the letter D in cursive
Capital D runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small d starts at line 1 and comes down to line 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Does your child add a loop at the top of small d? Start with the small a they already practise, then give it a tall back. Here is how to practise both D and d on four-line Indian copy.

Write capital D in 3 steps
- Start at line 1 and bring the stroke down to line 3.
- Curve out to the right, then sweep back up towards line 1.
- Close near the top. When joining to the next letter, take the join from the bottom curve.
Watch that the curve closes near the top rather than leaving D open.
Write small d in 3 steps
- Make the round belly between lines 2 and 3, just as you would for small a.
- Carry the stroke up to line 1 to make the tall back.
- Come straight down along the same path to line 3, then finish with an exit hook.
A useful reminder while your child writes: "Round part first. Tall back next. No loop."
The mistake to correct first
If small d looks like a stretched e or an l with a belly, check the top of the tall stroke.
The upward and downward strokes should follow the same path. Do not let them open into a loop. Keep the belly in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3.
Correct this before asking your child to fill another row in the school notebook.

Questions parents ask about D
Does small d have a loop at the top?
No. Take the tall stroke up to line 1 and retrace the same path down. Only the belly is rounded.
How is small d different from small a?
Both begin with the same round part in the middle space. Small d has a taller back that reaches line 1.
Does the free pack include both D and d?
The free 11 page pack covers capitals A to H, so it includes D only. For capital and small letters together, choose the A to Z pair at Rs 149.
Can I use these pages with my child's four-line notebook?
Yes. The practice uses four-line Indian ruling. Your child can follow the same line positions in their school notebook.
How tall should capital D and small d be on four-line ruling?
Capital D fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small d is a tall letter, so its stem also starts at line 1, but the body stays in the middle space between lines 2 and 3. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
