Letter I
How to write the letter I in cursive
Capital I runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small i stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where I and i sit on the four lines
- Capital I
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small i
- Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.
- Height group
- Middle, see the height groups explained.
Does your child's small i look like an l, or does its dot land over the next letter? On four-line school notebook, focus on two things: a short stem and one dot in the right place.
How to write capital I and small i
Use four-line Indian ruling, with line 1 at the top.
- Start capital I with a small loop. Begin just below line 1, curve down to line 3, then finish with a curve to the right.
- Keep small i short. Slant up from line 3 to line 2, come back down to line 3, and finish with an exit hook.
- Add one small dot. Lift the pencil and place the dot just above line 2, directly over the stem. When writing a joined word, finish the word before adding the dot.
What to watch in the school notebook
- A stem that is too tall: small i stays between lines 2 and 3. It should look shorter than l and t.
- A large or decorative dot: use one small dot, not a circle or a heart.
- A pause after every i: in a joined word, leave the dot until the word is finished so your child can keep the joining movement going.
The mistake to correct first
If the dot drifts right, it can look as though it belongs to the next letter.
Ask your child to point at the i stem with the pencil, then place the dot directly above it. Check this before asking for another row.

Questions parents ask about I
Should my child dot the i straight away?
For a single-letter exercise, add the dot after finishing the stem and exit hook. In a joined word, finish the whole word first, then add the dot.
Where exactly does the dot go?
Just above line 2, directly over the stem. Keep it small so it does not look like another loop.
Does the free pack include capital I and small i?
No. The free starter pack has 11 pages covering capitals A to H. For capital I and small i practice, choose the A to Z capital and small letter pair.
How do I receive the books?
The free pack is emailed in about a minute after you submit the form. For the paid pair, order at /order/ and pay on PayU. The files are emailed as soon as your payment goes through.
How tall should capital I and small i be on four-line ruling?
Capital I fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small i fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
