How to write the letter L in cursive

Capital L runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small l starts at line 1 and comes down to line 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where L and l sit on the four lines

Capital L
Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
Small l
Tall. Line 1 down to line 3, with the body between lines 2 and 3.

Does your child's small l look like a straight stick or a stretched e? On four-line school notebook, focus on one thing first: a narrow loop that reaches line 1.

Write capital L in 3 steps

  1. Start with a loop just below line 1.
  2. Sweep down to line 3.
  3. Finish with a flat curve to the right, ready to run into the next letter.

Keep the finishing curve on the base line rather than letting it dip below.

Write small l in 3 steps

  1. Take the upward stroke right up to line 1.
  2. Turn into a narrow loop and come down to line 3.
  3. Finish with a short exit hook on the base line, ready to join.

Small l is a tall letter. Unlike t, it should reach line 1.

The mistake to correct first

If your child copies small l from print, it may become a straight stick. Keep the cursive loop so the letter can flow into a join.

If the loop is too wide, it can look like an e stretched tall. Ask for a narrow loop before asking for a whole row.

For two l letters together, as in ball, check that both loops reach the same height. The second one often comes out smaller.

Questions parents ask about L

Should small l touch line 1?

Yes. Take the loop right up to line 1 and bring it down to line 3. A short l can be confused with a smaller letter.

Should both loops in "ball" be the same size?

Yes. Keep both l letters equally tall and narrow. Point out the better loop and ask your child to match it.

How tall should capital L and small l be on four-line ruling?

Capital L fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small l is a tall letter, so its stem also starts at line 1, but the body stays in the middle space between lines 2 and 3. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
