Letter Q
How to write the letter Q in cursive
Capital Q runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small q sits between lines 2 and 3, with its tail in line 4. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Free starter pack, capitals A to H
The free 11 page pack does not include Q. It covers capitals A to H, so you can see the four-line format before choosing the A to Z book.
Where Q and q sit on the four lines
- Capital Q
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small q
- Tail. Body between lines 2 and 3, tail down into line 4.
- Height group
- Tail, see the height groups explained.
Does your child's small q look like g in the school notebook? Check the tail first. For q, it hooks right. For g, it loops left. That one correction is a good place to start.
Write Q and q in 3 steps
Use four-line Indian ruling so your child can see where the oval, belly and tail belong.
- Make capital Q. Start just below line 1. Draw a closed oval down to line 3, then add a short stroke across the bottom right.
- Make small q. Draw the belly anticlockwise in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. Add a straight back down to line 4, then hook it right.
- Practise qu together. Once q is clear, join it to u. This is the pair your child will use in words such as "queen" and "quick".
The mistake to correct first
If your child gives q a left loop, it can look like g. Check the tail direction before asking them to redo the whole letter. The belly may already be correct.
Watch for these details:
- Belly first: small q begins like a and g.
- Tail below: the straight back reaches line 4.
- Hook right: do not turn it into the left loop of g.
- Short finish on Q: keep the finishing stroke across the bottom right of the oval.

Questions parents ask about Q
Should my child practise q alone or with u?
Start with q to get the belly and tail right. Then practise qu as a pair, because q almost always appears with u.
How do I explain the difference between q and g?
Keep it simple: "q hooks right, g loops left." Point to the tail in the school notebook while saying it.
Does the free pack include Q?
No. The free 11 page starter pack covers capitals A to H. It lets you try the four-line practice format before choosing a paid book.
How do I get the free pack?
Fill in the email form on the free-pack page. The pack reaches your inbox in about a minute.
How tall should capital Q and small q be on four-line ruling?
Capital Q fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small q keeps its body in the middle space between lines 2 and 3, and only the tail goes down into line 4. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
