Letter P
How to write the letter P in cursive
Capital P runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small p sits between lines 2 and 3, with its tail in line 4. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Free starter pack, capitals A to H
The free 11 page pack does not include P. It covers capitals A to H, so you can see the four-line format before choosing the A to Z book.
Where P and p sit on the four lines
- Capital P
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small p
- Tail. Body between lines 2 and 3, tail down into line 4.
- Height group
- Tail, see the height groups explained.
Does your child's small p stop at the bottom of the middle space? On four-line school notebook, its straight tail must reach line 4. Start with that one correction before asking for another full row.

Write capital P in 3 steps
- Start at line 1 and bring the stem down to line 3.
- Retrace upward along the same stem.
- Swing out and round to make the bowl, closing it near the middle.
Capital P normally finishes without a join.
Write small p in 3 steps
- Start at line 2 and go straight down to line 4.
- Come back up along the same path to line 2.
- Make a bowl in the middle space, closing it on line 3.
Keep the bowl between lines 2 and 3. Only the stem goes down to line 4.
The mistake to correct first
If the stem stops at line 3, small p can look like a short n with a bowl. Ask your child to take the straight stem past the base line to line 4.
Check one p together before continuing the row:
- Does the tail reach line 4?
- Is the tail straight?
- Does the bowl stay between lines 2 and 3?
Small p has a straight tail, unlike the curved tails of g, j, q and y. Do not add a loop at the bottom.

Questions parents ask about P
Does the free pack include P?
No. The free 11 page starter pack covers capitals A to H. Submit the form on the free pack page, and it arrives by email in about a minute.
Should small p have a loop below line 3?
No. Keep its tail straight down to line 4. The bowl belongs in the middle space, not below the base line.
Does capital P need to join the next letter?
Capital P normally finishes without a join. Focus first on a clear stem and a neatly closed bowl.
Can we use these pages with four-line school notebook?
Yes. The practice uses four-line Indian ruling, so you can check the same line positions in your child's school notebook.
How tall should capital P and small p be on four-line ruling?
Capital P fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small p keeps its body in the middle space between lines 2 and 3, and only the tail goes down into line 4. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
