How to write the letter R in cursive

Capital R runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small r stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where R and r sit on the four lines

Capital R
Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
Small r
Middle. Between lines 2 and 3 only, half the height of the capital.

Does your child's small r reach too high or look like a printed r? Start with one neat letter on four-line school notebook. Keep the shoulder small and the whole letter in the middle space.

Write capital R in 3 steps

  1. Start at line 1 and bring the stroke down to line 3.
  2. Retrace upwards, then curve out to make a small bowl in the upper space.
  3. From the middle, take the leg out and down to line 3.

Keep the bowl compact so there is room for the slanting leg.

Write small r in 3 steps

  1. Make an upstroke from line 3 to line 2.
  2. Form a small shoulder at the top, like a short, flat step.
  3. Make a short dip, then an exit hook ready to join the next letter.

Say it together: "Up, over, dip, out." Aim for one flowing movement, not separate pieces.

The mistake to correct first

If small r looks like a stick with a curve added on, your child is using the print shape. Show the flowing movement once, then let them try beside your example.

Check these two things before asking for another row:

Write a, c, n, r side by side. All four should sit at the same height in the middle space.

Rohan rain. Check that every letter keeps its own height: the capital reaches line 1, the middle letters stay between lines 2 and 3, and only a tail goes down to line 4.

Questions parents ask about R

Should small r touch the top line?

No. Small r stays in the middle space, between lines 2 and 3. Capital R reaches line 1.

Why does my child's r look like n?

The shoulder is probably too rounded. Show a small, flat step instead of a full arch.

Can we try the ruling before buying?

How tall should capital R and small r be on four-line ruling?

Capital R fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small r fills only the middle space, between lines 2 and 3, so it ends up about half the height of the capital. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
