Letter H
How to write the letter H in cursive
Capital H runs from line 1 down to line 3. Small h starts at line 1 and comes down to line 3. This is the four-line ruling in the school notebook: line 1 the ceiling, line 3 the writing line, line 4 for tails. Trace the model, then write the pair yourself.

Where H and h sit on the four lines
- Capital H
- Line 1 down to line 3. Two spaces tall.
- Small h
- Tall. Line 1 down to line 3, with the body between lines 2 and 3.
- Height group
- Tall, see the height groups explained.
Does your child's small h look like n, or curl down like y? On four-line school notebook, focus on two things first: a tall stem and a second leg that stops on line 3.

Write capital H in 3 steps
- Make the first down stroke from line 1 to line 3.
- Loop back up and make the second down stroke from line 1 to line 3.
- Join the two strokes with a bar at the middle.
Keep both down strokes upright and landing on line 3.
Write small h in 3 steps
- Start the tall stem at line 1 and bring it down to line 3.
- Retrace part of the way up, then arch over within the middle space, below line 2.
- Bring the second leg down to line 3. Finish with a small forward hook, not a downward tail.
Small h is small n with a tall stem. If the arch is uneven, practise n first, then add the taller stem for h.
The mistake to correct first
If the second leg curls below line 3, small h can look like y. Before asking for another row, point to line 3 and say: "Stop here, then hook forward."
Check these three things in your child's school notebook:
- The tall stem reaches line 1.
- The arch stays below line 2, inside the middle space.
- Both legs land on line 3, with even spacing from one h to the next.

Questions parents ask about H
Why does my child's small h look like n?
The first stem may be too short. It needs to reach line 1, while the arch stays below line 2.
Should small h have a tail below the line?
No. The second leg stops on line 3 and hooks forward. A downward tail can make it look like y.
Does the free pack include small h?
No. The free 11 page pack covers capitals A to H. Choose the A to Z pair for both capital and small-letter practice.
How do I receive the files?
For the free pack, fill in the email form. It arrives in about a minute. For the paid pair, order at /order/ and pay on PayU. The files are emailed as soon as your payment goes through.
How tall should capital H and small h be on four-line ruling?
Capital H fills the two spaces from line 1 down to line 3. Small h is a tall letter, so its stem also starts at line 1, but the body stays in the middle space between lines 2 and 3. If the two end up the same height, that is what to correct first.
